Tips to help with anxiety

Anxiety disorders are one of the most common psychological problems within society but also one of the most treatable. Whether it be through CBT, counselling or another modality to help with anxiety, there ARE sources of support.

I work with clients who experience anxiety, diagnosed and undiagnosed but the one thing I find universal amongst clients and anxiety is that the anxiety is usually maintained by avoidance.

Yes, you read correctly! Avoidance is not your friend when it comes to tackling anxiety.

I know many people with anxiety symptoms find relief from avoiding an activity that triggers anxiety such as not going to a party if you have social anxiety, not going to an interview if you have generalised anxiety or simply having extreme rituals that you must follow to feel safe such as with PTSD or OCD.

But all of the above examples are actions and activities that are done to avoid the feelings, thoughts, and sensations associated with anxiety. In the short term, this gives immediate relief, however, in the long term, this maintains the anxiety and keeps it strong and potent.

Many techniques can help you cope with anxiety that can give temporary relief, but to reach a long-term goal of anxiety not being overwhelming and not stopping you from enjoying life, and getting in the way of things you wish you could achieve; the best solution is to face the thing that you are avoiding.

Of course, it's not as simple as just going out and facing it directly. And I know that reading the above line can even be anxiety-provoking, but some steps can be taken to get you to the point of being able to face the avoidance. The best way to do that is by working with a trusted individual who is both qualified and experienced at working with anxiety disorders such as a counsellor or therapist.

Another great way to help overcome anxiety is by being educated on anxiety and anxiety disorders. Whether from self-help books, courses on anxiety, or again working with a counsellor, education can help give you some insight into what anxiety is, why it happens, and some useful knowledge to help tackle it.

If you're looking for a way to help you manage your anxiety, feel free to get in touch with me and see how counselling can help you.
